When the angels proclaimed Jesus'birth, they said:
Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, good will towards men! (Luke 2:14 )
Did they get it wrong? We don't seem to see very much peace on earth. This century has seen more than its fair share of wars between nations, and there have been riots on the streets and the break-up of many families. Peace on earth?
But the peace the angels proclaimed that Jesus would bring was firstly and mainly between Man and God. Through his death, Jesus made it possible for Man to be at peace with God (Colossians 1:20 ).
You see, by nature Man is at war with God. Man is sinful. In his heart of hearts, Man acknowledges God's laws to be righteous. And Man knows that, according to those laws, he stands guilty before a holy God and deserves only death and Hell. Man needs forgiveness and God is willing to forgive. He sent his son, Jesus, into this world to die in the place of all those who would repent of their sins and trust in him. But most people are unwilling to repent; and so they remain at war with God. They remain under the wrath of God.
Some of us, however, by God's grace have repented of our sins and believed on Jesus. We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1 )
How about you? Are you still at war with God or have you made your peace with him? The ironic thing is that it is we who are the rebels, we who are in the wrong: and yet it is God who has done everything necessary for us to be at peace with him. All we need to do is to turn our back on our rebellion, to lay down our arms and surrender to him. Will you do that? If you refuse, you can be certain that God will condemn you on the Day of Judgment, and commit you to eternal punishment.
But if you will accept his gracious offer of peace, then you will experience for yourself that peace which the angels proclaimed about 2, 000 years ago.
